Spain get first win at the Nations League after defeating Switzerland

(Football news) Spain managed to secure their first win in the UEFA Nations League after defeating Switzerland 1-0. A goal from Pablo Sarabia was enough for La Roja with the 30 year old capitalising on a mistake by his opponents to give Luis Enrique’s team the lead in Geneva. A victory was essential for Spain, who have already drawn 1-1 against Portugal and needed a last minute goal to salvage a 2-2 draw against the Czech Republic. As for Switzerland, it was their third consecutive defeat, having already lost 2-1 to Czech Republic and 4-0 to Portugal.

The result meant that Switzerland lost their first competitive match at home in eight years with the run stretching over 23 matches. Spain are now second in Group A2, two points behind Portugal while Switzerland are last, four points behind Czech Republic. Speaking after the match, Luis Enrique said “I think the balance of the game was very positive and that allowed us to take charge. We deserved the victory."

In last year’s Euro 2020, the two sides went to a penalty shootout with Spain edging through in a closely contested match. This time around, Sarabia’s goal came from an error by Eray Comert, who’s heavy touch led to Ferran Torres dispossessing him, passing the ball to Marcos Llorente who provided the assist for Sarabia in the 13th minute. There were little to no goal scoring opportunities after the opening goal with the best chance coming in the 87th minute when Haris Seferovic beat the offside trap but failed to hit the target.
