Spain beat Czech Republic; Ronaldo-less Portugal lose to Switzerland

(Football news) Spain defeated Czech Republic 2-0 at La Rosaleda. It was a dominating performance by Luis Enrique's men who went top of the table with the victory. The Czech team had two very good chances to take the lead early on as Spain were very sloppy in possession. Unai Simon made two crucial saves to keep it goalless. It was the home side who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute after Marco Asensio set up Carlos Soler. The two combined once again to create a good chance but Soler's shot was hit wide of the goal. Spain were well in control of the game and got a cushion as Ferran Torres assisted Pablo Sarabia in the 75th minute.

Portugal lost 1-0 against Switzerland away from home. Manager Fernando Santos decided to rest Cristiano Ronaldo, Joao Moutinho and Raphael Guerrero for the match. Haris Seferovic broke the record for the fastest goal in UEFA Nations League history as he opened the scoring inside 57 seconds. In the 16th minute Danilo had a great chance to score from a set piece but Jonas Omlin produced a good save. Just a minute later Rafael Leao looked to have equalised but the goal was ruled out for an offside in the build up. Portugal had a lot of possession in the 2nd half but they couldn't create clear cut chances as it ended 1-0.

Group two of the UEFA Nations League has been concluded for the first set of fixtures. Despite a wobbly start, Spain are top of the group with 8 points, having won 2 and drawn 2 games. Portugal are 2nd with 7 points as they have won 2 drawn 1 and lost 1 game. Czech Republic are 3rd 4 points courtesy of their 1 win, 1 draw and 2 losses. Switzerland are bottom with their 1 win and 3 losses resulting in 3 points.
