Serie A: AC Milan suffer a shock defeat as Napoli close in both the Milan clubs

(Football news) AC Milan suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at the hands of Spezia as they failed to capitalize on Inter dropping points. In-form Milan winger Rafael Leao put his side in front at the end of the first half after Theo Hernandez missed a penalty but Spezia soon struck back through substitute Kevin Agudelo in the 64th minute. In the dying minutes of the match Junior Messias thought he had won it for them when he curled home in stoppage time winner, but the referee's whistle had already stopped for an earlier foul on Milan's Ante Rebic, and Spezia took advantage of this as Emmanuel Gyasi struck the killer blow with final kick of the match to win it for them  at the death. The decision left Milan players furious with referee Marco Serra as he hardly left any time for advantage to be played, with around two seconds passing between the foul on Rebic and Messias' shot. This was a missed opportunity for Pioli's side, who knew going into the game, a win would send them top.

Spezia climbed to 14th place on 22 points, six clear of the relegation zone as Milan stayed in second with 48 points meaning they are 2 points behind Inter having played a match more. Milan went into the game on a run of three consecutive league wins, despite missing a string of key players through injury and playing in the Africa Cup of Nations as Pioli’s side couldn’t take advantage and go on top of the table.

"I tried to calm down the players but couldn't, We know we have suffered an injustice. It's a shame, the responsibility is ours for the goal we conceded but that must be shared with the referee. Milan coach after the late controversy said.

"The guys were great, they knew it was a difficult game against a team that is fighting for the title. We did well right to the end," Spezia coach Thiago Motta said.

Napoli went back to winning ways as they won 2-0 against Bologna and now have closed that gap to AC Milan to two points and are also four points behind leaders Inter. A brace from Hirving Lozano helped them capture all three points. In the first half, Elmas cuts in from the left in the one-on-one and places a perfect ball on the penalty spot for Lozano who sends the ball into the back of the net to put Napoli ahead in the 20th minute, The story of the second was the same as the first half, in the 47th minute a Napoli's counter-attack ended with Fabían's killer pass to Lozano, who coolly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 for the club from Naples. With this result Napoli stayed in third with 46 points.
