Romelu Lukaku expresses desire to return to Inter Milan after 6 months at Chelsea

(Football news) Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has expressed his unhappiness at the situation he finds himself in at Chelsea and has questioned manager Thomas Tuchel’s system in an interview with Sky Italy. The 28 year old moved to Chelsea this summer for a record fee of £97.5m after spending two seasons at Inter Milan, winning the Scudetto earlier this year. Lukaku rejoined Chelsea a decade after he first joined the club and has scored seven goals in 18 appearances, resulting in the striker completing 90 minutes only once in Chelsea’s last 13 matches.

Speaking to Sky Italy, Lukaku said “Physically I'm doing great. I'm just not very happy with the situation, but that's normal. I think the boss has decided to play a different formation but I have to stick at it and get on with it professionally. I'm not happy with the situation but it's my job and I mustn't give up." The Belgian striker was in prolific form for Inter Milan, scoring 34 goals in 51 appearances in his first season followed by 30 goals (24 in the Serie A) as the I Nerazzurri won their first Scudetto in 11 years.

Lukaku added: "I don't think any of it should have happened the way it did. The way I left Inter and the way I communicated with the Inter fans. I'm annoyed about that because it's not the right time now but it wasn't the right time when I left either. I always said that I love Inter and I'll play for them again. I really hope so. I fell in love with Italy. "Now is the right time to talk about it and tell people what really happened, without saying anything bad about anyone, because I'm not like that.

"I want to really apologise to the Inter fans because I don't think I should have left Inter the way I did. I should have spoken to you guys first, especially after everything you did for me, for my family, my mum, my son. I'll never forget that. I hope from the bottom of my heart to go back to Inter and not at the end of my career but when I'm still at a good enough level to win more trophies."

If we are to analyze what Lukaku meant by Tuchel changing the formation, it raises more questions than answers. Tuchel previously employed a 3-4-2-1 formation but after the Belgian striker signed for the club the manager said “We now have the chance also to play with two strikers, like they did at Inter with [Lukaku], or to continue with three strikers. We will see now how this works out."

However, it’s unclear if Lukaku is referring to a strike partner as the Belgian has only partnered with TImo Werner five times this season while he consistently had Lautaro Martinez or Alexis Sanchez alongside him at Inter Milan. However, the more obvious answer seems to be that the Belgian is unhappy with his playing time at the club, having suffered an injury which has resulted in others being given more time. In the interview, Lukaku said “I think I'm in a moment where the boss could play me a little more but I have to respect his decisions, continue to work and wait for my time to come. We're trying to find a middle ground where we can meet, a system which can help the team perform at its best because right now we're in a complicated situation. The boss made a choice, I have to keep working and at some point we will talk with Tuchel and see how it's going."
