(Football news) Real Madrid defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in what was a frustrating game for the home side. Carlo Ancelotti lined up with Luka Modric and Antonio Rudiger on the bench while Andriy Lunin started between the sticks as Thibaut Courtois was injured. The Merengues started the game at an extremely high pace and created a bulk load of chances. Rodrygo scored in the 13th minute before assisting Vinicius Jr 15 minutes later. Real Madrid were cruising and had so many chances to make it 3-0. However they stepped off the gas towards the end of the first half and conceded a goal.
In the 2nd half Real Madrid created loads of chances but the finishing was not good enough. The hosts had 16 shots in the game out of which 14 were on target but they only scored 2 goals. The ball just wouldn't go in for Real Madrid. Thankfully for them Shakhtar didn't manage to get the equaliser and Madrid extended their lead at the top of the table. The Spanish side now have 9 points and could secure qualification to the knockouts next week. It wasn't the best of performance as far as finishing is concerned but Real Madrid did create a lot of chances. The front 3 of Rodrygo, Vinicius and Karim Benzema linked up multiple times for some intricate play. Fede Valverde and Toni Kroos also supported them from midfield.
Karim Benzema's link up play was really good but his finishing is not up to the mark so far this season. Ancelotti needs his captain to reignite the fire he had last year because Real Madrid desperately need it. The Los Blancos’ defensive woes continue as they still have kept only 2 clean sheets this season. Real Madrid take on Getafe away from home at the weekend where Luka Modric is likely to be fit enough to start. Ancelotti in the press conference said that there will be changes for that game.
