Real Madrid edge Barcelona in thrilling El Clasico to reach the Super Cup final

(Football news) El Clasico is the biggest rivalry in club football history and the 2022 Spanish Super Cup final was just another example why. Real Madrid won the contest 3-2 at the end of extra time. This was Real Madrid's 100th victory over FC Barcelona and also their 5th consecutive El Clasico win.

Real Madrid came into the game as clear favourites but Los Blancos were put to work for the victory. Real Madrid started the game well with two brilliant chances falling to Marco Asensio who couldn't hit the target. Vinicius Jr opened the scoring after being set up by Karim Benzema in the 25th minute. The goal came after Sergio Busquets was robbed in possession. Barcelona equalised after Eder Militao's attempted clearance bounced off Luuk De Jong and went past Thibaut Courtois.

Barcelona began the 2nd half on the front foot keeping possession and creating chances. Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid the lead against the run of play in the 72nd minute after a scuffle in the Barcelona box. The move started when Dani Alves easily let Ferland Mendy run past him. The Blaugrana did get the equaliser via Ansu Fati who headed home Jordi Alba's cross. Real Madrid failed to keep their shape after a corner and left Fati unmarked in the box. The game went to extra time where Fede Valverde scored the winner after a simple counter attack.

Barcelona controlled the majority of the game but Real Madrid were deadly on the counter and looked like scoring with every opportunity. Xavi decided to play very high which Vinicius exploited on many occasions while the high press of Barcelona troubled Real Madrid. Despite scoring 3 goals Real Madrid weren't clinical in the final third. Los Blancos missed a lot of chances and the decision making of a lot of players was questionable. Had Real Madrid converted the chances the game would've been over in the first 45 minutes itself. Real Madrid will now face the winner of Atletico Madrid and Athletic Club in the final to try and win their first trophy since the La Liga in 2020.
