Premier League: Manchester United welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford

(Football news) Manchester United will hope to get back to winning ways in their fixture against third place Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford. The Red Devils were forced to settle for a goalless draw against Newcastle United last week while Tottenham defeated Everton 2-0. Antonio Conte’s team now have three consecutive wins in all competitions but the team haven’t done well on the road this season with only two wins in seven across all competitions, scoring just three goals in five away matches.

As for Manchester United, it was a frustrating draw against Newcastle last week but the biggest concern for Ten Hag is how toothless his team looked in attack. The team wasn’t clinical enough with Rashford and Fred missing some glorious opportunities while Jadon Sancho didn’t get a penalty and Ronaldo had a goal disallowed. A result against Spurs will be vital for the top 4 ambitions as last weekend’s draw means that the Red Devils are already three points behind fourth place Chelsea after nine matches.

In team news, Manchester United have  Axel Tuanzebe (unspecified), Brandon Williams (unspecified), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (muscle), Harry Maguire (hamstring), Donny van de Beek (muscle) and Anthony Martial (back) unavailable for selection. It’s uncertain whether Christian Eriksen has recovered from his illness and if he starts, it could be alongside McTominay and Casemiro with Fred having a disastrous game against Newcastle. Cristiano Ronaldo will hope to retain his place in the starting lineup but Marcus Rashford is also in contention for the number 9 role.

As for Tottenham, Richarlison is a doubt after suffering an injury against Everton while Dejan Kulusevski remains doubtful after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury. Emerson Royal is currently serving his third and final suspension and Matt Doherty will feature in the starting lineup in his absence. Yves Bissouma is likely to be introduced into a 3-5-2 formation while Harry Kane will hope to become the first player in Tottenham’s history to score in six consecutive Premier League games. A low scoring draw between the two teams seems like the most likely result from this fixture.
