Odisha FC defeat reigning champions Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League

(Football news) The Tilak Maidan witnessed a massive upset on Monday as Odisha FC stunned reigning champions and league leaders Mumbai City FC 4-2 to throw the league wide open with just one point separating Des Buckingham’s side to second place Hyderabad FC who have played a game less. The result also means that Kiko Ramirez’s Odisha FC are just three points away from Mumbai City FC who are winless in their last three games.

Odisha FC’s Aridai Cabrera found the back of the net as early as the fourth minute despite Mumbai City FC’s dominance but Ahmed Jahouh equalized in the 11th minute with all indications hinting towards a high scoring match. Igor Angulo then put Mumbai City FC in the lead in the 38th minute but two goals from Jerry Mawihmingthanga (70’, 77’) put Odisha FC back in the driving seat. To add the cherry on top, Jonathas scored in the 89th minute to ensure the Kalinga Warriors were assured of the three points.

Odisha FC struck a blow early on when Mourtada Fall gave the ball away in his own half due to an unforced error which was capitalized on by Aridai Cabrera whose curling shot went into the far post. However, Mumbai City FC pulled a goal back through Ahmed Jahouh in the 11th minute with a 25 yard curling effort after being assisted by Cassio Gabriel with a perfectly weighted pass. Mumbai City FC could have got the lead at the half hour mark through Raynier Fernandes but the midfielder’s header failed to hit the target. Igor Angulo did give the reigning champions the lead in the 38th minute with a precise header from Jahouh’s freekick.

The Kalinga Warriors began the second half on the front foot and Sahil Tanwar could have equalized at the hour mark with a header from 12 yards away. Mumbai City FC’s Ygor Catatau did find the back of the net but the goal was ruled off due to the 26 year old being offside. In the 70th minute, Jerry Mawihmingthanga managed to score an equalizer with a diving header to the far post and then went on to score his second goal just seven minutes later with a powerful shot from the right flank that went straight into the top corner. To make matters worse, Jerry then provided the assist to Jonathas in the 89th minute who converted from close range and scored Odisha FC’s fourth goal of the match.

Mumbai City FC will next play bottom place side SC East Bengal on Friday, 7th January at the Tilak Maidan while Odisha FC will take on ATK Mohun Bagan on Saturday, 8th January at the Fatorda Stadium.
