(Football news) Eddie Howe has been appointed as the new manager of Newcastle United, replacing Steve Bruce at St James’ Park. The former Bournemouth manager has been out of a job since 2020 and is the first managerial appointment by the Saudi led consortium who purchased the club in October 2021.
Unai Emery was previously linked to the Newcastle job but the former Arsenal and current Villareal manager released a statement announcing his intent to remain with the reigning Europa League champions. Howe, who will begin taking the training from Tuesday said “It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United, It is a very proud day for me and my family.
"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players. I would like to thank the club's owners for this opportunity and thank the club's supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together." Howe was previously linked to a job with Celtic earlier this year but the Scottish side opted for Ange Postecoglou instead after negotiations broke down between the two parties.
Howe was present at the stadium when Newcastle drew 1-1 against Brighton, becoming the only winless side in the Premier League after Norwich City defeated Brentford 2-1 in Daniel Farke’s final game in charge. Newcastle co-owner Amanda Staveley said: "We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process. As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward. He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here. We are delighted to welcome Eddie and his staff to St James' Park and very much look forward to working together towards our collective ambitions."
Newcastle are yet to name the first team coaching appointments as Howe’s first fixture in charge will be against Brentford on November 20th.
