(Football news) Manchester City have announced Rodri's contract extension till 2027. Speaking on his extension Rodri said “Joining City in 2019 is the best decision I have made in my career. I have loved every second. The fans have been amazing with me, I feel totally supported by the Club and the manager pushes me every single day. I have improved so much as a player, and I want to thank Pep and all the backroom staff for their help. They are completely committed to helping me become the best player I can be, and I appreciate their hard work. We have been very successful since I came here, which is something that makes me very proud. But to be honest, that success has made me even more hungry for me. Once you start winning big titles, you don’t want to stop. City, I feel, offers me the best chance of winning trophies and that’s why I am so pleased to be staying here for longer.”
In 3 years with Manchester City, Rodri has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League. He has been a solid rock in Pep Guardiola's midfield and he has played a very big part in City's recent success. Manchester City recently announced the signing of Kalvin Philips from Leeds United which put Rodri's starting spot in doubt. The extension means that Rodri isn't bothered with the arrival of Phillips and he will fight with him for the same spot. Pep Guardiola does love rotating his team more often than the other managers so it will be interesting to see how he uses Phillips and Rodri. Playing both of them together in a double pivot could also be system for Guardiola to experiment with.
Manchester City are continuing to build their squad to the be the best in the world. They have already signed Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips and Julian Alvarez this season. After the renewal of Rodri, City will now work on the renewals of Riyad Mahrez and Phill Foden. Manchester City still need a left back and reports linking them with Marc Cucurella are getting stronger.
