(Football news) Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan, the player and Manchester United have mutually agreed for the termination of the 37 year old’s contract. Ronaldo, who is currently with the Portugal national team for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar made some scathing accusations against the Manchester United hierarchy, claiming that he was betrayed by the club and that he was forced out (despite trying to secure a move in the summer transfer window). Manchester United said they will consider their response "after the full facts have been established" and have now decided to part ways with the player.
As per the termination, Ronaldo will not receive a settlement fee which means that Manchester United will save about £16m in player wages. It’s understood that there is a sense of relief at the club after sorting out the Ronaldo issue and there is an expectation that Erik ten Hag’s team could get even stronger for the second half of the season despite Ronaldo’s absence. A statement released by Manchester United read “Cristiano Ronaldo is to leave Manchester United by mutual agreement, with immediate effect. The club thanks him for his immense contribution across two spells at Old Trafford, scoring 145 goals in 346 appearances, and wishes him and his family well for the future. Everyone at Manchester United remains focused on continuing the team's progress under Erik ten Hag and working together to deliver success on the pitch."
Issuing his own statement, Ronaldo said “Following conversations with Manchester United we have mutually agreed to end our contract early. I love Manchester United and I love the fans, that will never ever change. However, it feels like the right time for me to seek a new challenge. I wish the team every success for the remainder of the season and for the future." The question remains, which could possibly be Cristiano Ronaldo’s next destination. A number of big teams have already distanced themselves from the 37 year old but a move to Saudi Arabia or the MLS isn’t out of the realm of possibility. However, considering that he is a free agent, it’s realistic for him to go to another European club that is competing in the Champions League.
One of the biggest obstacles will be that Ronaldo will expect to start every single game, which at his age isn’t a realistic possibility. The five time Ballon D’Or winner will hope to have a solid World Cup campaign in order to entice European clubs to make an offer for him. Irrespective, expecting a top club who can potentially compete in the Champions League won’t adapt their style of play to get the best out of Ronaldo, who despite being one of the greatest players of all time, is past his best. Ronaldo will have to understand that being the main man at a top club might not be possible anymore but given his talent and fitness, he can still be a big asset to a formidable club.
