Mainz beat champions Bayern, Dortmund lose despite Haaland’s hattrick

(Football news) Newly crowned champions Bayern Munich lost 3-1 to Mainz. The hosts outclassed Bayern throughout the game and could have scored more than three goals. Mainz took the lead when Jonathan Burkardt produced a missile in the 18th minute. Mainz had 24 shots on the goal compared to Bayern's four, scored again when Moussa Niakhate tapped in at the far post from a subsequent corner. Bayern waited half an hour for their first real opportunity and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting hit the post. Although they did pull a goal back as Robert Lewandowski bagged his 18th away goal of the season for a new league record and his 34th Bundesliga goal of the season. Just as Bayern were looking for an equaliser after the break, Mainz struck again thanks to a beautiful counter attack which resulted in a deflection of Leandro Barreiros shot in the 57th minute to restore their lead.

"It was not something I enjoyed. Mainz did it well. They had many chances and deserved to win. They had good energy and we did not have it," Nagelsmann said.

"After the 10th straight league title it can happen, it's human. But still the passion should be visible, the effort to not let in goals. Mainz could have scored eight or nine goals."

"We have had a few games this season where opponents had many chances."

Dortmund’s disappointing season got much worse as they lost 4-3 to VFL Bochum despite Erling Haaland’s hattrick. VfL Bochum scored twice in the final nine minutes to snatch a memorable 4-3 victory at Borussia Dortmund. The result kept Dortmund in second but a point away from securing second spot with just two games remaining. It also handed Bochum their first win at Dortmund since 1998.

Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick to take Dortmund from 2-0 down to a 3-1 lead but the visitors got off to a dream start in their local derby and were 2-0 up within the first 8 minutes thanks to goals from Sebastian Polter and Gerrit Holtmann. Dortmund quickly recovered and pulled a goal back with Haaland's 16th-minute penalty as the Norwegian bagged his second with another spot kick in the 30th minute. The 21-year-old striker thought he had completed their comeback with a lucky tap-in but Bochum came back once more, levelling through Juergen Locadia in the 81st and then Pantovic penalty completed a memorable comeback on a historical day for the club.
