(Football news) Liverpool have progressed to the quarter finals of the UEFA Champions League after a 2-1 aggregate win over Inter Milan. After winning the first leg 2-0, Jurgen Klopp's men managed to limit Inter to a 1-0 win at Anfield. Both the legs were close games where Inter could've qualified if certain things had gone their way.

Liverpool were boosted by the return of Joel Matip after a short absence. Simone Inzaghi selected Alexis Sanchez to partner Lautaro Martinez up front and kept Edin Dzeko on the bench. Inter started the game really well as they nullified Liverpool's high press. Liverpool didn't have any chances apart from a few set pieces where they were dangerous. The Nerazzurri finally pulled a goal back in the 62nd thanks to a long range strike from Martinez. 

Virgil Van Dijk was the one at fault as he failed to close down the Argentine who had a lot of space to pull the trigger. The match was blown open but just a minute later the referee showed a 2nd yellow card to Alexis Sanchez for planting his studs on Fabinho. While his 1st yellow card was deserved, the 2nd one was controversial because he won the ball as cleanly as possible. Inter failed to score again after being a man down. Marcelo Brozovic was very crucial in linking up play and did a great job before an injury forced him off in the 75th minute.

Inter Milan performed really well in both the games but luck was definitely not on their side. They now have to concentrate on the Serie A where they are in a tough title race with AC Milan and Napoli. Liverpool on the other hand will look at this tie as a job done as the performance wasn't that great but it's the qualification that matters. After winning the Carabao Cup they could pull off the unthinkable by winning the quadruple.
