Late goals by Salah and Nunez help Liverpool defeat Napoli

(Football news) Liverpool managed to get two late goals through Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, resulting in a 2-0 victory over Napoli in the Champions League. The result still means that Napoli will finish at the top of Group A on goal difference while the Reds are equal on points (15) after six games (featuring five wins and a draw). Egyptian striker Salah scored from close range in the 85th minute after Nunez’s header was saved by goalkeeper Alex Meret while the Uruguayan scored a goal of his own in the 90 + 8th minute, taking advantage of Virgil van Dijk’s initial header which was saved.

Napoli’s Leo Ostigard appeared to have given the hosts an advantage, finding the back of the net in the 53rd minute, but the goal was overturned by VAR after finding him in an offside position. As for Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp will be happy with his team’s result, especially after that 2-1 defeat to Leeds United at Anfield last weekend. In team news, Klopp made four changes to his side with Andy Robertson, Harvey Elliott, Joe Gomez and Darwin Nunez dropped out with Kostas Tsimikas, James Milner, Ibrahim Konate and Curtis Jones featuring in the starting lineup.

Speaking after the match, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said “I don't doubt the quality, no one has doubted the quality. That's been part of the problem as we don't show consistency. That's why I mentioned the second goal against Leeds as an example of a situation where you defend with all you have but we were chasing the game. When we defended, we defended with all we had tonight. We were compact. Nobody has forgotten what we did last season, the boys haven't forgotten it but it's not important. I know people are going to get sick of me saying it but we really have to fight through and then the real football that we can play can come back. But tonight we showed everything.

“Really good pieces of football and the defensive stuff was at a high level. Napoli are a real force so it could have been really difficult tonight. Consistency and stability is what we need to get. I would have enjoyed the game even without the goals but they are important stuff. We showed a really good reaction. Being compact makes all the difference. All of a sudden we have the challenges in the right spaces and we are difficult to play against. If you have seen what Napoli can do it was a really good game for us. I saw a lot of courage and bravery. Two set-pieces got us the points and to take 15 (points) in this group is absolutely insane."
