Have Real Madrid made a mistake by not signing a back up right back?

(Football news) The winter transfer window is about to shut and all the major clubs in Europe have been busy in getting rid of dead wood and/or bringing new players in. One club who has done nothing is Real Madrid.

Los Blancos have made no signings or sales in the window. In the summer window they sold Raphael Varane, Martin Odegaard and Borja Mayoral. They also lost Sergio Ramos for free. They signed David Alaba for free and Eduardo Camavinga for £26 million. Real Madrid failed to sign Kylian Mbappe who is expected to join them in the summer. The Los Blancos are having a fantastic season so far as they are fighting for all 3 trophies after winning the Spanish Super Cup.

Real Madrid have recently gotten good performances out of players like Isco and Dani Ceballos who are far behind in the pecking order which is why they have not gone shopping in the window. However there is a position which needs a player and that is right back. Real Madrid sent Alvaro Odriozola on loan to Fiorentina in the summer and decided to trust Lucas Vazquez who is naturally a right winger as a back up right back for Dani Carvajal.

The problem they face currently is that Dani Carvajal has missed 49 games in the last two seasons due to injury. Carvajal's injury woes has meant that Lucas Vazquez has played a lot of games this season. The Spaniard has been good the majority of the times but not being a natural right back means that he makes a few mistakes. If Vazquez gets injured, Real Madrid will really struggle to find a right back. Nacho is a player who can play there but he is the 3rd choice centre back and it will be a massive risk to play him as a right back.

A right back should have been on Real Madrid's list. They have been linked with Pedro Porro and Reece James in the past but nothing has been advanced. Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti may regret not getting a right back with fixtures coming thick and fast after the break. Real Madrid did sign Eduardo Camavinga on the last hours of the deadline day and there is still a fair amount of time left for them to sign someone. Even if it is only a temporary fix, the signed player might come in handy.
