Griezmann goal enough to get Atlético Madrid crucial win over Bilbao

(Football news) Atletico Madrid beat Athletic Club 1-0 in front of a sold out San Mames. The Rojiblancos despite their poor European form have won 4 of their last 5 League matches. Simeone ditched the 3-5-2 and reverted back to his classic 4-4-2 with Antoine Griezmann and Alvaro Morata up front. Joao Felix and Axel Witsel were once again left on the bench as was Yannick Carrasco. Athletic Club on the other hand played in a 4-2-3-1 with Iker Muniain as expected. Atlético Madrid really needed a win to get some momentum back. San Mames was absolutely rocking for the big game.

Atlético Madrid looked to have taken the lead via Alvaro Morata but it was controversially ruled out by VAR for a soft foul in the build up. The first half was really cagey as neither team created a clear cut chance. The Rojiblancos started the 2nd half really well and just 2 minutes after the restart broke the deadlock. Alvaro Morata set up Griezmann who scored his first goal since signing a permanent deal with Atleti. Jan Oblak, who has been struggling with injuries this season was once again taken off in the 69th minute after a knock on the shoulder. Substitute Ivo Grbic made a really good save in the 84th minute to protect the clean sheet. Grbic made another good save in the 87th minute but seconds later the referee gave Bilbao a penalty for handball. Thankfully for Simeone and his men VAR reversed the decision as it had clearly not come from anyone's arm.

The visitors secured the 3 points in classic Atletico Madrid fashion. Victory meant that Atlético Madrid went ahead of Athletic Club to 3rd in the La Liga table. They are now just 3 points behind 2nd placed FC Barcelona and 6 points behind defending champions and league leaders Real Madrid. The Rojiblancos' next game is against Rayo Vallecano at the Wanda Metropolitano on Tuesday. The result is a minor setback for Athletic Club who have had a good start to their campaign. They will have a chance to bounce back when they travel to Getafe on Tuesday.
