(Football news) Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is set to undergo a medical after an agreement has been reached with Nice for the Danish goalkeeper. The 35 year old will end his 11 year stay with Leicester where he won a Premier League title, FA Cup, Championship and a Community Shield. This weekend, Leicester manager Brendan Rogers had confirmed that Schmeichel would be allowed to leave if an agreement is reached and the goalkeeper will travel to France in the next 24-48 hours.
Schmeichel has been a part of the most successful spell in the club’s history, winning the Championship and promotion in 2013/14, the Premier League title in 2015/16, and the FA Cup and Community Shield in 2021. He will be joining Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey at Nice after the 31 year old’s contract was terminated by Juventus. Leicester’s financial woes have been well documented and the club are also linked with the departures of James Maddison, Wesley Fofana, Harvey Barnes and Youri Tielemans while they are yet to make a single signing this summer.
Speaking about Schmeichel’s future, Leicester manager Brendan Rogers said “There's been a little bit of interest over the summer. Kasper has earned the right to have a think about the next chapter of his career and where that's going to be. When there's something concrete, we'll sit and discuss it, and take it from there. Absolutely (it is a possibility Schmeichel may not start the season in goal). There's nobody here guaranteed to play. You have to defend your place by your performances every day in training and in games. He's been a great player for me in my time here.
“He's been brilliant over many years for the club. But you're always looking forward and always looking to see where the team can improve. There's lots of things to weigh up because sometimes speculation and the prospect of a move can affect people. For some, it doesn't, and they just get on with their work. Either way I will always pick a team that is fully committed, that's what's important. Kasper is going into his 12th season and he has earned that respect and the time to make sure. He's 35 years of age and it's a big year for him. It's a time of his life where he might consider another challenge and he has to be able to do that. So it's just communication and then we'll see where it's at this coming week.”
