Fernandes set to sign a new five year contract with Manchester United

(Football news) Manchester United’s Portuguese talisman Bruno Fernandes is on the verge of signing a new and improved five year contract at the club. Talks between the two parties were on hold during the turn of the year but negotiations have resumed after they found a breakthrough. The 27 year old is expected to double his weekly wages and will now earn £240,000 a week, which is the primary objective of this contract extension as the midfielder signed a five and a half year contract with an option to add another 12 months in 2020.

To say that Bruno Fernandes has been an impact at Manchester United would be an understatement. The former Sporting Lisbon player is arguably one of the best signings in the post Ferguson era and was instrumental in changing the club's fortune after his arrival in the January transfer window. However, it might be concerning for the Manchester United hierarchy that he has been unable to replicate his form this season and will really need to step up if he has ambitions of winning trophies at the club he is pledging his future with.

The contract will make Fernandes one of the highest earners at the club alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (£400,000), David de Gea (£375,000), Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, Edinson Cavani, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford who earn upwards of £200,000. Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Fernandes managed 12 goals and eight assists in his opening 22 games and stepped up his form in his first full season, scoring 18 Premier League goals, and 28 in all competitions along with 18 assists. In comparison, his season has been disappointing this time around with only 9 goals and 13 assists as the team looks to secure Champions League qualification for next season.
