Euro 2022: Germany progress into the quarter finals after win over Spain

(Football news) Germany Women defeated Spain 2-0 at the Brentford Community Stadium to secure their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2022 after topping Group B. The performance proved once again why they are considered favourites for the title as they took as little as three minutes to take the lead. A poor clearance from Spain goalkeeper Sandra Panos saw Klara Buhl capitalise on the opportunity and find the back of the net to give her side the best possible advantage at the beginning of the match.

Germany then doubled their lead in the 36th minute as Alexandra Popp scored her second successive goal at the Euro 2022, heading home from Felicitas Rauch's corner. Spain clearly missed Alexia Putellas and Jennifer Hermoso and despite their slick passing and possession, they lacked the killer instinct and had only three shots on target. They will now face Denmark for the second quarter final spot on Saturday and can take a few positives from their clash against Germany, most notably Patricia Guijarro’s ability to find a defence splitting pass. However, Spain will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they hope to go all the way in the European championships.

Speaking after the match, Germany manager Martina Voss-Tecklenburg said “The players had a big challenge, yesterday was a very difficult day, the game euphoria was gone and then the Covid case [Lea Schuller]… some players were worried, even now we don't know what's going to come in the next few days. I was fighting together with the team from the touchline. I may not have run as much as they did, but I was also giving it my all." Germany will now face Finland in their last game of the Group Stage at the Stadium MK on Saturday.

Spain boss Jorge Vilda said "I hope this will help us for the next game and for the future. We have to prepare ourselves mentally. After the goal, we may have played our best 30 minutes. I think we [applied ourselves]; the team has been consistent. Now it's time to recover and prepare for the Denmark game, when we will play to reach the quarter-finals." Spain will now take on Denmark for their place in the quarter finals at the Brentford Community Stadium.
