England Women defeat Latvia 20-0 in World Cup qualifiers

(Football news) England topped their World Cup qualifying group by five points after a record breaking 20-0 victory against Latvia at the Keepmoat Stadium, with the result being their biggest ever competitive win in history. Ellen White became England Women’s record goalscorer in the process, the forward is also second in the all time leading goalscorers list in the Women’s Super League, scoring 58 goals for Arsenal, Notts County, Birmingham and Manchester City.

The goals began to flow from as early as the third minute when Beth Mead opened the scoring for the Lionesses followed by a sixth minute strike by Ellen White with a wonderful finish from outside the box, equalling her record with Kelly Smith. The Man City forward surpassed the record three minutes later by scoring her second goal from close range with Georgia Stanway providing the assist for both the goals.

Despite the fact that Latvia were clear underdogs heading into the match, few would have predicted such a scoreline before the fixture took place. The visitors are 94 places behind England at 102nd in the world rankings. Beth Mead doubled her goal scoring tally of the night after her 12th minute goal and Lauren Hemp headed home her first international goal in the 18th minute. Five minutes later, Mead completed her hat-trick with a headed goal to make the score 6-0 with only 23 minutes into the match.

To make matters worse for Latvia, Ella Toone scored in the 42nd minute while Lauren Hemp scored two minutes later to ensure England Women went into half-time with a score of 8-0. Four minutes into the second half, Ella White completed her hat-trick when she fired a shot from outside the box that Latvia goalkeeper Laura Sinutkina failed to save. Three minutes later, Stanway scored the 10th goal of the night after converting a penalty due to Beth Mead being fouled inside the box.

The substitutes also added their own contributions with Carter finding the scoresheet in the 56th minute, Beth England in the 61st minute and Jill Scott in the 67th minute to make it 13-0 for the hosts. With a 13 goal lead, England were level on their biggest win which was eclipsed when Alessia Russo scored her first international goal in the 71st minute. Hemp managed to complete her hat-trick in the 76th minute, Nobbs found herself on the scoresheet, Russo completed her hat-trick with two goals in two minutes, Beth England scored her second goal and Hemp scored her fourth goal of the night to make it 20-0.
