Club Brugge hold Atletico to a draw thanks Simon Mignolet’s heroics

(Football news) Club Brugge created history at the Wanda Metropolitano as they held Atletico Madrid to a goalless draw and qualified for the UCL Round of 16 for the first time. Brugge became only the 2nd Belgian team after KAA Gent to make it to the Champions League knockouts. Simon Mignolet was the star of the show as he made 9 saves in the match to follow the 5 saves he made in the reverse fixture. The Belgian club has now kept 4 clean sheets in 4 games this season. Atletico Madrid are now in deep trouble as they could end up in the Europa League if they lose any of their next two games.

Diego Simeone started with Antoine Griezmann and Angel Correa up top as Joao Felix was once again left on the bench. The Portuguese forward hasn't started a game since the Madrid derby on 19th September. The hosts had 65% possession and 21 total shots but they failed to find the back of the net. Striker Kamal Swoha was sent off in the 82nd minute after receiving a 2nd yellow for kicking the ball away before a free kick. Atletico Madrid couldn't even manage to get the better of 10 men as Brugge defended really well. Attacking wise Club Brugge didn't offer any threat as they only had 1 shot on target.

The pressure is piling on Simeone as he is now in danger of dropping down in the Europa League just like fellow Spanish clubs Barcelona and Sevilla. Atletico's next game is a tricky away fixture at San Mames against Athletic Club. Simeone and the club have both said that they have no intentions to part ways but results definitely have to change as Atleti have only 6 wins in 12 games this season. Last season was also a disappointing one but it ended well as the Rojiblancos qualified for the Champions League. A drop to the Europa League would be a massive loss for them and it could force the club ro change managers.
