(Football news) Goals from Jorginho and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang helped Chelsea secure a 2-0 win over AC Milan at the San Siro. The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 18th minute after Fikayo Tomori received a red card. The former Chelsea defender was found guilty of attempting to tug back Mason Mount inside the penalty box and the referee subsequently pointed to the spot. The Blues took the lead when Jorginho converted the penalty and Aubameyang doubled the advantage in the 34th minute to secure a convincing victory. The result means that Chelsea are now at the top of Group E and a victory against RB Salzburg in their next match will ensure a place in the knockout round.
AC Milan started the game brightly and had an opportunity to equalise despite being reduced to 10 men if Olivier Giroud would have capitalised on his header. However, Fikayo Tomori’s red card dealt a massive blow for AC Milan after attempting to tug Mason Mount back inside the penalty box. Mount was instrumental in Chelsea’s second goal as well, with his pass splitting the Milan defence with both Aubameyang and Sterling on hand to pounce on the opportunity. Potter substituted Mount at the interval while Reece James was forced to be substituted at the hour mark after an awkward landing.
Speaking to BT Sport, Chelsea manager Graham Potter said “To come here and win is certainly not easy, that is for sure. Credit to the players. They were really good, I thought. Obviously, we got a bit of luck with the opponent going down to 10 men but I thought overall the performance was good. He was on a yellow card and has played a lot of games so we just thought it would be sensible at half-time to give him a breather. But I thought he was fantastic, got into good spaces and attacked the goal well, won the penalty for us and was a constant threat."
