Celtic win the Scottish Premiership title after draw against Dundee

(Football news) Celtic secured the Scottish Premiership title after drawing 1-1 against Dundee United at Tannadice Park. The result means that Ange Postecoglou's team are now four points clear of 2nd place Rangers with only a game remaining in the Australian’s first season in charge. A goal by Giorgos Giakoumakis was enough to secure a point for the visitors in the 53rd minute and the result also means that Celtic will play Champions League football next season as well as receive £40m in revenue for qualifying.

Anything but a defeat was needed for Celtic to secure their 10th Scottish Premiership title in 11 seasons as Rangers ended their dominance last term. It looked like a straightforward victory for Celtic when Giorgos Giakoumakis opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, netting his 15th goal of the season but Dundee United’s Dylan Levitt spoiled the party by scoring the equaliser in the 72nd minute. The 1-1 result suited both the teams as Celtic secured the Scottish Premiership title while Dundee United secured their place in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers.

Speaking after the match, Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou said “Pretty special. First time this year I'm lost for words. Really proud of the players, staff and everyone involved. Nobody gave us much of a chance. To do what they've done and achieve the ultimate is an unbelievable effort. It's massive. The fans had a tough year last year, not just the fact we didn't win anything but they couldn't come support their team.

“I'm just proud of this group of players, they've been unbelievable this year.  I think our football has been outstanding but the character this team has shown in 31 games and to rise to every challenge. I couldn't be more proud of them. It was a bit nervy, it's only natural. These guys have had their heads down and been so focused on being successful, but they got the job done."

Celtic captain Callum McGregor said “Absolutely delighted. The players deserve it so much. The fans were unbelievable again tonight. They have been all season. I'm so proud of the lads, everyone at the club. It's a new group and we've been absolutely relentless since day one."
