(Football news) Burnley drew 1-1 against Aston Villa at Villa Park, with the point helping the Clarets move out of the relegation zone. A penalty late in the first half by Ashley Barnes put Burnley ahead but Villa’s Emiliano Buendia equalised in the 48th minute.
The Clarets had an excellent opportunity to retake the lead late in the game when Wout Weghorst missed a golden opportunity, resulting in the two teams being forced to settle for a point each. Villa manager Steven Gerrard would be particularly disappointed with his team’s performance, especially considering that their opponents were down to 10 men after Matt Lowton received a red card. Burnley will now need to at least match Leeds’ result in the final game of the season to ensure their survival in the Premier League.
Speaking after the match, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard said “I think we should have been playing against 10 men from a very early stage of this game. I think that is a clear red card, probably one of the clearest I have seen this season. That decision went against us. The PGMOL said there was not enough force for that to be a red card. I heard it and I was 60 yards away. He has run into the incident from 10 yards, he has pulled his elbow back and he has smashed him in the face. I mean, have you got to break someone's cheek or make them go off the pitch for it to be a red card? Everyone knows that is a red card. That is a fact."
