(Football news) Robert Lewandowski scored the fastest hat-trick in Champions League history as Bayern Munich thrashed RB Salzburg 7-1 at the Allianz Arena to reach the quarter finals of the elite club competition. The Polish striker scored three goals in 23 minutes and reached the 40 goal mark for the sixth successive season, overcoming the previously held record for the fastest hat-trick by AC Milan's Marco Simone against Rosenborg in 1996 which took 24 minutes to complete.
The last time the two teams met, Bayern Munich scored a last minute equaliser through Kingsley Coman as both the teams drew 1-1 in Austria. However, the game was pretty one sided this time around after Nicolas Capaldo missed an opportunity to score for Salzburg. The opening goal was scored by Lewandowski who was brought down by Maximilian Wober and the Polish striker scored his first goal from the spot in the 12th minute. The second goal occurred in almost identical fashion as Wober once again fouled Lewandowski who scored from the subsequent penalty yet again at the same corner of the net.
The third goal occurred shortly after as advancing Salzburg goalkeeper Philipp Kohn kicked the ball against Lewandowski and it ricocheted off the striker and hit the post after which the Polish striker tapped it in, scoring his 42nd goal of the season. Kingsley Coman dispossessed Mohamed Camara in the 31st minute to set up Serge Gnabry whose shot went under Kohn’s body and into the back of the net.
Nine minutes after the restart, Thomas Muller scored Bayern’s fifth goal before Salzburg’s Maurits Kjaergaard scored a consolation goal with a brilliant left footed strike. The 18 year old became the youngest ever Danish goalscorer in the Champions League, surpassing Christian Eriksen. However, the German champions weren’t done there as Muller scored his 52nd Champions League goal in the 83rd minute before Leroy Sane scored Bayern’s seventh goal two minutes later to wrap up a dominant victory for the hosts. This was Red Bull Salzburg’s heaviest defeat in their history of the competition, with their second heaviest also coming against the same opponents.
