Bayern extended their advantage as Dortmund fail to maintain pressure

(Football news) Bayern Munich were back to their clinical best as they beat Union Berlin 4-0 after drawing their last two league games. The Bavarians are chasing a record-10th league crown in a row and subsequently took the lead in the 16th minute when Union keeper Andreas Luthe was surprised by a powerful shot from Kingsley Coman from outside the box to give them a much deserved lead. After that, Tanguy Nianzou powered in a header in the 25th minute and Lewandowski converted a stoppage time penalty to go three goals up at the halftime break. The Pole added his second of the match right after the restart to take his league tally to 31 goals this season before they eased off and took the pace out of the game. Bayern also set a new league record having scored 81 goals by the 27th matchday and will be looking to break the German record of 105 goals in a single season.

Nagelsmann spoke on the performance of Tanguy Nianzou “I’m happy with the result, of course. Upa made a mistake, but he recovered. Tanguy was very good. In the first half we allowed too much. After losing the ball ourselves, we played two balls into Awoniyi’s foot from the wing. But overall we played to nil, and scored four goals. You have to take a result like that,”

He added by saying “I talk to him a lot, we have a lively exchange. He was outstandingly good today. The greed on the penalty kick was also super. We would like to keep him. But it’s not always that easy. Nevertheless, I don’t have the feeling that he doesn’t want to stay with us. It’s a joint decision in the end. Strategy, approach, timing – we’re all in one place, so there will certainly be talks. It’s the same with Manuel, Thomas and Serge. The financial situation is sufficient, I hope. The contracts don’t expire next week and these players haven’t earned just 1500 euros so far, after all.”

Dortmund failed to maintain pressure at the top of the table as they drew 1-1 to FC Koln, dropping six points behind Bayern Munich with seven games left in the season. Marius Wolf, who had scored the winner against Arminia Bielefeld, put the visitors in the lead after just eight minutes but Dortmund really didn’t capitalise on the lead apart from an Erling Haaland shot that sailed narrowly wide, Dortmund showed little in the first half. FC Koln grew in confidence and got a deserved equaliser through Sebastian Andersson in the 36th minute after Jannes Horn's free kick was flicked towards goal by Anthony Modeste.

Haaland missed a one-one-one 10 minutes after the restart with the keeper Marvin Schwaebe denying the Norwegian with a fine block as Dortmund reclaimed the initiative early in the second half to find that elusive winner. The visitors thought they had finally done enough to score when Gio Reyna burst clear down the wings and Haaland moved down the middle into the box but his cutback was cleared at the last moment before it could reach Haaland. With this result, Dortmund remained in second place on 57 points, with Bayern top on 63.
