Bayern and Salzburg draw after late Coman equaliser

(Football news) A last minute equaliser by Kingsley Coman ensured Bayern Munich drew to RB Salzburg in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie at the Red Bull Arena Salzburg. On paper, it was a David vs Goliath battle but the Austrian underdogs took the lead through substitute Chukwubuike Adamu in the 21st minute and it appeared that the six times Champions League winners would see their unbeaten run finally come to an end. However, Coman latched onto Thomas Muller’s flick and scored at the back post in the 89th minute to salvage a draw.

Despite Salzburg starting the match on a positive note, it was Bayern Munich who had the first real opportunity when Serge Gnabry forced Philipp Kohn to make a good save. The hosts took the lead when Karim Adeyemi charged at the Bayern defence and Brenden Aaronson diverted the ball in Chukwubuike Adamu’s path who found the back of the net in the 21st minute. The Nigerian was a 12th minute substitute for the injured Noah Okafor and his effort went past Bayern Munich’s goalkeeper Sven Ulreich.

RB Salzburg continued to threaten the Bayern defence after taking the lead as Aaronson forced Ulreich into making a fine save while the hosts also had a penalty call denied by referee Michael Oliver when Karim Adeyemi appeared to have been fouled by Benjamin Pavard inside the box. Bayern Munich began dominating the proceedings in the second half but couldn’t create many clear cut chances as Leroy Sane’s shot went wide.

Bayern continued to knock on Salzburg’s door as Kingsley Coman and Sane were denied an opportunity to level the score by Kohn. The German champions were lucky not to have conceded a second goal as Ulreich stopped Adeyemi’s effort while Pavard blocked the follow up by Adamu. In the 89th minute, Coman was at the right place at the right time to shoot in the bottom right corner and take his side level, thereby ensuring that there is nothing to separate the two teams when they face each other in the second leg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, March 8th.
