Atletico Madrid edge Rayo Vallecano to solidify top 4 spot

(Football news) Koke's 2nd half goal was enough to secure 3 points for Atlético Madrid with a win against Rayo Vallecano. After 5 wins and 1 draw in their last 6 games, the Madrid side traveled away to Rayo Vallecano to solidify their top 4 spot. Diego Simeone lined up with his 3-5-2 formation which he has used for the majority of the season as Luis Suarez and Angel Correa were once again benched.

Atletico Madrid controlled possession in the first half but didn't create any direct chances. The game was very cagey as neither team looked close to breaking the deadlock. The 2nd half started with both teams showing some intent but it was the away side who took the lead after Joao Felix set up Koke, just 4 minutes after the restart. Rayo Vallecano had two great chances before the 60th minute, one of which was cleared off the line while the other was saved by Jan Oblak.

Substitute Angel Correa was shown a controversial straight red card after pushing a Rayo player in the 85th minute. The home side couldn't take advantage of the extra man as the game ended 1-0. It was a professional performance from the Rojiblancos who are now 4 points ahead of 5th placed Real Betis going into the international break. They will face Manchester City in the UCL quarter finals straight after the break. Atleti, just like Barcelona, have recovered well in the 2nd half of the season and now look favorites to finish in the top 4.
