Atletico lose 4th game in a row; Benzema brace guides Real Madrid to victory

(Football news) Real Madrid and Atlético have played their last game of the year. Real Madrid have ended the year 8 points clear at the top of the table. They are also 15 games unbeaten in all competitions. Atletico Madrid on the other hand are struggling to defend their league title as they now sit 17 points off the top at 5th place.

Granada came back from a goal down to stun Atletico Madrid who have now lost 4 league games in a row. Joao Felix gave Atlético the lead 2 minutes into the game with a superb solo effort where he ran from the halfway line. 15 minutes later Darwin Machis scored the equalizer with a stunning long range goal. Atletico Madrid had quite a few chances to regain their advantage but failed to capitalize. Felix looked to have scored his 2nd towards the end of the half but the referees pulled back for a foul which enraged the Atleti players. Veteran striker Jorge Molina scored in the 61st minute to give Granada the lead. Atletico Madrid missed a couple of very good chances as the game ended 2-1. Diego Simeone has a lot of problems to address during the holiday period before their next league game at home against Rayo Vallecano.

A severely understaffed Real Madrid scrapped a 2-1 win against Athletic Club at San Mames. Despite missing 10 first team players Los Blancos managed to end the year with 3 points at one of the toughest away grounds in Spain. Karim Benzema scored twice in the 7 minutes the first of which was a sublime first touch strike from outside the box. Oihan Sancet pulled one back in the 10th minute to mark an electric start to the game. It simmered down a bit as Madrid started getting hold of the ball for longer periods of time. Towards the end of the game Bilbao had the majority of the ball as they worked hard for an equaliser. Real Madrid gave them a few chances with misplaced passes outside their own box. In the end they managed to hold on to the lead. Real Madrid now need rest and players to come back to training before their next game away against Getafe.
