(Football news) Argentina have called up Atletico Madrid’s Angel Correa and Atlanta United forward Thiago Almada as replacements for Nicolas Gonzalez and Joaquin Correa who were ruled out of the World Cup due to an injury on Thursday. Fiorentina's Gonzalez sustained a muscular injury on Thursday in a training session as the Argentina FA later announced that Inter Milan's Joaquin Correa also appeared to get an undisclosed injury. Angel Correa who turned 27 recently has been in decent form having scored four goals in 21 appearances for Atletico Madrid this season. He was also a member of Argentina's 2021 Copa America winning side.
The 21 year old Almada just completed his first season in MLS with Atlanta United, where he completed the season having scored six goals and getting 12 assists in 29 appearances to earn the league's newcomer of the year award. The former Velez Sarsfield star made his debut for Argentina in a friendly against Honduras in September. The Albiceleste begin their World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia on Nov. 22 as Lionel Scaloni already stated after their 5-0 win over the UAE that he could make changes to his World Cup squad. All the teams have until 24 hours before their first game to make alterations to their roster if any injuries occur.
The 18 year old Manchester United sensation Alejandro Garnacho misses out on yet again as he has been overlooked by head coach Lionel Scaloni for a dream World Cup call-up. Garnacho has been in brilliant form of late but clearly has not done enough to earn a place in the Argentina squad for Qatar after Scaloni was forced to alter his squad list due to injuries. Garnacho is eligible to represent both Spain and Argentina as he was born in Madrid to Argentinian parents. It was thought that Argentina were considering another surprise call-up for the young star after his recent form which has led him to a meteoric rise at Old Trafford
"We have some little problems, we have days to decide the list," Scaloni said. "We can make changes. There is the possibility. It's obvious that there are players that are not well, they are not available to play or there is a risk. Hence, I cannot guarantee that those players are well. We have to be cautious."
