(Football news) A late strike by Nottingham Forest substitute Lewis Grabban sealed a 1-0 victory for the Championship side over Arsenal at the City Ground in the FA Cup. The Reds will now face Leicester City in the fourth round after winning against the 14 time FA Cup champions. Mikel Arteta's team put up a disjointed performance and deservedly lost the fixture, four years after Forest defeated Arsenal 4-2 in the third round of the same competition.
Forest showed more efficiency in attack despite failing to test Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno. Arsenal’s vulnerabilities prompted Arteta to replace Nuno Tavares after just 34 minutes for Kieran Tierney. After a forgettable first half, both sides had a few chances after the break with Philip Zinckernagel testing Leno while Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah missed an opportunity. James Garner’s freekick was saved by Leno as Arsenal gave a debut to Charlie Patino who failed to make a meaningful impact.
The breakthrough eventually came when Lokonga lost the ball in midfield and Yates provided a cross to Grabban who capitalized on the opportunity to find the back of the net in the 83rd minute. Forest will next face Millwall while Arsenal will take on Liverpool in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final.
The clash between Liverpool and Shrewsbury Town saw 17 year old Kaide Gordon become the youngest player in Liverpool’s history to score an FA Cup goal in a comfortably 4-1 victory for Jurgen Klopp’s team at Anfield. It looked like an upset might be on the cards when the visitors took a 27th minute lead through Daniel Udoh despite only having 15% possession. However, the Reds got the equalizer in the 34th minute through Gordon who also became Liverpool’s second youngest goalscorer in all competitions (at 17 years and 96 days) behind Ben Woodburn.
The hosts took the lead with a Fabinho penalty just before half-time and doubled their advantage when substitute Roberto Firmino’s backheel went into the back of the net in the 78th minute. To add to Shrewsbury’s woes, Fabinho scored his second goal in the 90 + 3’rd minute to secure a 4-1 victory. Liverpool will host Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final on Friday, 1:15 am IST while Shrewsbury will take on Crewe on Saturday.
