F1 GP bid from Thailand programs as PM visits Imola

Thailand's prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, attended Imola to discuss the concept of securing a Formula 1 event, indicating a slight progress in the proposal.

(Motorsports news) During an official visit to Italy, Thavisin attended the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to meet with various stakeholders and have a conversation with F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

The government is pushing for the Thai Grand Prix project, but it’s heard that Thavisin has reached out to Red Bull over the company’s interest in supporting the initiative.

With any luck, Thavisin will be able to get a deal to stage a street race in Bangkok in 2027 or 2028.

Following his visit, he shared on social media his thoughts that the grand prix would contribute to Thailand’s international exposure.

“I visited the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari and had a discussion with executives of the Formula One Group in line with the Thai Government’s intention to bring F1 racing to Thailand in the near future,” the man wrote.

“This resonates with our policy to place Thailand on the global radar for international events and activities.”

Thailand’s race proposal is in line with F1’s current objective of building a stronger foundation for grand prix competition in Asia.

Known to be enthusiastic about the concept of the race in Bangkok, Domenicali traveled to Thailand in April to hold discussions with Thavisin.

It is evident, however, that the emergence of races such as Thailand may force Formula One to abandon some of its present events; the survival of Imola in particular is under scrutiny.

While telling Italian media recently that there will probably be some difficult decisions to be made shortly as Imola’s contract runs out at the end of next year, Domenicali recently stated on a Wall Street analysts call that there was little desire for F1 to extend the calendar.

“We are seeing a lot of interest from a lot of countries in Formula 1, and this obviously represents an opportunity for development,” he stated.
