(Tennis news) Trailing 4-1 at the break in the first set, Emma Raducanu fought back to take Magda Linette to a tie-break which she claimed 7-3. In contrast, the second set was a lot more straightforward as Raducanu opened a 4-1 advantage and held onto her lead to secure the victory. The 20 year old will now take on either Beatriz Haddad Maia or Czech Katerina Siniakova in the third round. The 2021 US Open winner is competing in her first tournament since crashing out of the Australian Open second round to Coco Gauff.
The British number 1 has experienced many injury woes since last year, recently recovering from a wrist problem and tonsillitis which forced her to miss an event in Texas as well as an exhibition match with Cameron Norrie. Raducanu overcame Danka Kovinic 6-2 6-3 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open on Thursday and after the match addressed her injury concerns but insisted that she wouldn’t change a thing about her career despite the many troubles she has experienced.
Raducanu said “Sometimes you wonder, like, how is this possible? But then very quickly I think you create your own luck. It works both ways. I won the US Open as well. I have to take the bad luck sometimes because good fortune has also come upon me. I wouldn’t trade that title for the world. I’m just prepared to take whatever it takes, knowing that I have that in the bank.” In other results Iga Swiatek overcame Claire Liu in 65 minutes to win the opening match 6-0 6-1.
