Electronic Arts to honour 99% discount for FIFA 23 Ultimate Edition

(Football news) Electronic Arts has admitted to have committed "a pretty spectacular own goal" after pricing FIFA 23’s Ultimate Edition at India’s Epic Games store for 4.80 rupees ($0.06; £0.05) by mistake but have said that they will honour the pre-purchase price. A decimal point error in the pricing resulted in the buyers rushing in to snag the deal in what was a 99.98% discount for a game that costs 4800 rupees.

The Ultimate Edition of FIFA games is more expensive than the standard edition because Electronic Arts offers many more features such as limited edition tradeable player items, extra Fifa points and access before the official launch. The 2023 version is priced at 4,800 rupees ($60/£50) for the Ultimate Edition while the Standard Edition costs 3,499 rupees ($44/£36).

News spread like wildfire across social media with people flocking to India’s Epic Games store to buy the game. While the error was quickly resolved, many buyers who had purchased the game for 4.80 rupees were afraid that EA might refund or cancel their order. However, both EA and Epic Games sent out emails this week saying that the purchases will be honoured for 99.98% discount.

FIFA 23 will be EA’s last ‘FIFA’ branded game as the licence is set to expire with the football governing body, however, the studio will continue making football games under the banner of EA Sports FC. This will bring an end to a 29 year old partnership between FIFA and Electronic Arts and the governing body is expected to release their own rival games in the future. FIFA 23 will feature women’s teams, a factor that has generated great buzz and excitement amongst fans due to the growing popularity of women’s football.
