(Sports news) Five time Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah secured the gold medal in the 100m category, posting a time of 10:95 seconds. England’s Daryll Neita, who finished at a personal best of 10:90 in the semi final could not replicate her form and finished with a bronze medal. The withdrawal of Fraser-Pryce is the reason Thompson-Herah is participating at the Commonwealth Games and the Jamaican used her invaluable experience to secure the gold.

Speaking after winning the gold medal, Thompson-Herah said “I’m feeling good. I didn't have the best execution but nevertheless I had to dig for that one but I am still grateful to win my first Commonwealth Games. I started in 2014 in the 4x100m. Then in 2018 in the 200m I came fourth and now I upgraded to a gold."

In other results, Ferdinand Omanyala won the men’s title, becoming the first Kenyan to win the 100m gold at the Commonwealth Games. He overcame defending champion from South Africa Akani Simbine by posting a time of 10.02 seconds while SImbine managed 10:13 seconds. After the result, Omanyala said “I am over the moon, I thrive on the hype of this sort of event. I was very fast in rugby and I think I am even faster on the track”

Sri Lanka's Yupun Abeykoon claimed the country’s first athletics medal since 1998 by taking bronze with a time of 10.14 seconds. New Zealand’s Hamish Kerr won the men’s high jump (2.25 metres) while defending champion Brandon Starc won silver. Sarah Mitton of Canada took the title, throwing at a distance of 19.03, overcoming defending champion Danniel Thomas-Dodd in the final round.
