(Football news) Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus helped his side qualify for the quarter finals as they snatched a 70th-minute winner when they battled past VfL Bochum in a 2-1 win on Wednesday. Dortmund, who are going to face Chelsea in the Champions League Round of 16 next week, have now gone on to win all five matches that they have played this year which included their four league games. Dortmund had the upper hand in the first half but came up against a very disciplined Bochum backline.
Julian Brandt was the first to trouble the keeper when he went close with a free kick and Sebastien Haller slipped as he sent the ball flying over the bar with only Bochum keeper Manuel Riemann to beat in the 43rd minute. Dortmund scored the first goal as they needed a bit of luck to open the scoring when Riemann charged out of the box to clear with the ball landing at the feet of Dortmund’s Emre Can on the halfway line. Can took his chance with a shot from 50 metres out and the ball subsequently rolled into the goal before Riemann could scramble back in first-half stoppage time.
Bochum in the second half were the better side and earned a 64th-minute penalty following a VAR review for a hand ball in the penalty box and Kevin Stoeger sent keeper Gregor Kobel the wrong way to level scores. Reus, who came on as a substitute in the 67th went on to tap in the winner three minutes later after Jude Bellingham had charged through the entire defence and laid the ball on the plate for his captain in the box. Dortmund have suddenly turned their season around after the Winter break as they not only now aim to win the German Cup but also challenge Bayern for the Bundesliga crown.
