(Football news) Raphael Varane in an interview recently said that he doesn't regret joining Manchester United. The Frenchman said "In football, you have to challenge yourself and try to improve. I wanted another experience after 10 years in the same place. The Premier League is absolutely fantastic and Manchester United are a great club. There was no doubt about my decision." Manchester United spent £34 million to sign Varane from Real Madrid which is quite high for someone who had only one year left on his contract. Since then the defender hasn't been able to make an impact at Old Trafford due to various injury issues among other things.
Varane left Real Madrid for a new challenge and experience as he had won everything that was there to win in his 10 years at the Spanish capital. Los Blancos respected the player's ambition and let him leave even though they had lost Sergio Ramos in the same window. Varane has also said in an interview in 2021 that Real Madrid doesn't celebrate UCL victories as after winning the immediate thought is to go for the next one. Varane's statements showed that he maybe got tired of the huge expectations and demands which is why he left the club to enjoy his football with less pressure and more fun. Real Madrid went on to win the La Liga and the Champions League with their new back line. Varane has had injury problems in his career before but at Manchester United it was even more. The Frenchman couldn't get a run of games which cost not only him but the team as a whole.
Manchester United signed another centre back in the form of Lisandro Martinez. Varane welcomed the signing by saying "Competition is good for the team. The team will always be better with competition. Every great club is like this. If everyone wants to fight for the team, that’s a good thing.” The centre half will be hoping that his 2nd season is much more successful than his first both individually and as a collective. This will be a fresh start for United under Erik ten Hag and Varane will be a crucial part of Ten Hag's plans.
