(Football news) Nottingham Forest have opened talks with Manchester United to sign Dean Henderson on loan with the option to buy the goalkeeper for about £20m. The points of negotiation include whether an arrangement can be reached over Henderson’s salary and personal terms as the 25-year-old keeper played only three times last season, once in the UCL, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. David de Gea held down the No 1 spot and didn’t give Henderson a shot at becoming United’s number 1.
Newcastle are also expressing interest in Henderson but they will not take further part in the negotiations until and unless the conditions of the transfer changes. Forest were promoted to the Premier League this season after a dramatic win in the playoffs final against Huddersfield Town with Brice Samba as their first-choice goalkeeper. He played all but six Championship games and playoff matches, with Ethan Horvath his understudy being the number 1 for the majority of the season. Brice Samba has now turned down a new deal and the pursuit of Henderson indicates he could leave the historic club. Henderson has come through the United academy and showed a lot of faith at the club when he played 10 of the final 12 Premier League matches of the 2020-21 season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But the coach ultimately preferred De Gea again last August by Ole Gunnar Solskjær and his terrific form meant that he was retained by Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick.
Henderson has spent most of his United career on loan at Shrewsbury and Sheffield United, including one full season in the Premier League. In November 2020 he won his first England cap and he was also part of the Euro 2020 squad that made it to the final but he had to unfortunately withdraw because of injury. Manchester United also have the 36-year-old Tom Heaton as back-up in their ranks as De Gea is expected to be the no 1 under Erik Ten Hag also. West Ham also showed interest in Henderson but now they are concerned about signing Alphonse Areola from Paris Saint-Germain. He is expected to leave PSG after spending last season on loan at West Ham and are hopeful of making the deal permanent for about £11m. For Nottingham Forest they are also keen on taking James Garner on loan as the United academy player had a brilliant campaign which helped them get promotion for the first time since 1999.
