Day 6: Deepika Kumari outshines others in another disappointing day at the Tokyo Olympics

Indian archer Deepika Kumari beats Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez of USA 6-4 to progress into 1/8 Eliminations round

It was a closely contested and nerve racking round of 16 elimination between world number 1 Deepika Kumari and Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez with little to separate the two. Deepika began on the backfoot, losing the first set 25-26 but fought back in the second set 28-25 to level the contest at 2-2. She maintained her momentum to win the third set 27-25 but lost the fourth set 24-25 to Jennifer Mucino-Fernandez. Just when a dramatic comeback for the 18 year old American was looking on the cards, Deepika showed exactly why she is one of the best archers in the world by winning the fifth set 26-25 to progress into the 1/8 Elimination round.

Indian rowing team out of medal race in Tokyo

Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh in Lightweight Men's Double Sculls finished 6th in the Semifinal A/B 1 with a timing of 6:24.41 in the Tokyo Olympics. They had to finish in the top three to make it to the finals. O'Donovan and McCarthy of Ireland finished first as they bettered the Olympic mark and the World mark by recording a spectacular 6:05.33. Earlier in the Semifinals, A/B 1 Jonathan Rommelmann and Jason Osborne of Germany bettered the Olympic time of 6:10.99 set in Beijing 2008 by Britain as they finished in 6:07.33.

Varun Thakkar and Ganapathy Chengappa in trouble after 4 races in Tokyo

The Indian sailing pair of Varun Thakkar and Ganapathy Chengappa are placed 18th overall in the 49er class with 8 more races to go. In their maiden Olympic Games their start has been a bit shaky and will look to progress up the table as there are still many races to go.

The first two races saw them finishing 18th out of 19 contestants, in the third race they finished 17th and in the fourth race they finished 19th. There are two races tomorrow and the pair will look to fight back.

Indian archer Pravin Jadhav loses to Brady Ellison 6-0 in the round of 16

In a day of extreme highs and lows for Pravin Jadhav, the Indian archer defeated world number 2 Galsan Bazarzhapov of Russia in straight sets 6-0 at Yumenoshima Ranking Field. However, his glory was short lived as the 31st seed Indian archer lost to world number 1 Brady Ellison of the United States with the same score in the next round. The legendary American archer proved to be a class above Jadhav despite a strong start and a valiant effort.

Sai Praneeth crashes out of Tokyo Olympics after losing against Mark Caljouw 

Sai Praneeth's badminton men's singles campaign came to an end in the second Group round as he lost 14-21, 14-21 to Mark Caljouw (WR 29) of the Netherlands. The Indians finished last in the group and third overall. Both of his matches were against players with lower rankings. Mark also made history by becoming the first Dutch player to reach the round of 16 in the Olympics.

Indian women boxers continue to flourish as Pooja Rani records victory in Tokyo

Pooja Rani started her campaign with a 5-0 victory over Ichrak Chaib from Algeria in Women's Middle (69-75kg) in Tokyo Olympics. She is into the Quarterfinals which is on 31st July. Pooja Rani is one of the medal contenders as this year’s women boxing team is looking strong and in form.
