(Tennis news) In the third round, Daniil Medvedev faced Marton Fucsovics after advancing against Arthur Fery and Adrian Mannarino. The Russian lost the opening set after stumbling early in the game and losing a break, from which he never recovered.
With one serve break in his favour, Medvedev played far better in the second set and went on to win it. In the third set, he carried on with his practice of setting the terms and even managed to capture a break early on. At 5-3, Fucsovics’ serve gave him a set point, which he squandered. However, he won the next game to seal the set.
Jiri Lehecka defeated Francisco Cerundolo and Sebastian Ofner to go to the third round, where he faced Tommy Paul. The Czech easily won the opening set by breaking his rival’s serve twice. He prevailed in the tie-break to win a closely contested second set.
After then, Tommy Paul mounted a comeback and won the following two sets by triumphing in the tie-breaks. In the fourth set, he even averted a match point. The fifth set saw the American’s defences break down, as Lehecka went on to win the match 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-7 (5), 6-7 (9), 6-2.
Head-to-Head
Since this would be their first encounter, the head-to-head record is now 0-0.
Predictions
To defeat Fucsovics, Medvedev overcame a slow start. His serve has held up reasonably well during his three matches at this venue, with an average of almost 75% of first serve points won. In the previous round, the Russian had 34 successful shots and nearly as many unforced errors.
Lehecka nearly lost a commanding lead against Paul but made a strong comeback to win. The Czech won 83% of his first serve points while hitting 19 aces. In addition, he made 63 winners as opposed to 43 unforced mistakes.
Lehecka made some intelligent offensive tennis plays, but he also occasionally chose shots that were questionable. Additionally, he became a little tense at crucial moments. These problems won’t allow him to defeat a player like Medvedev, so he’ll need to be more strategic with his approach.
Medvedev looks to be settling into his game on grass lately, despite some subpar performances in the run-up to Wimbledon. He ought to be able to beat Lehecka if he keeps playing in this manner.
