(Tennis news) The third-ranked player in the world, Daniil Medvedev, will try to avoid losing three matches in a row after struggling in the s-Hertogenbosch opening round and losing in the first round of Roland Garros two weeks ago. The top seed, who was playing on grass for the first time this season in s-Hertogenbosch, was defeated in three sets by 2019 winner Adrian Mannarino, sliding to 39-6 overall. Medvedev took the opening set, but just six games in the following two sets, as Mannarino earned his second victory on grass and sixth top-10 victory overall.
In Halle, Medvedev is 4-2; all four of his victories came during his journey to the championship match in 2015 when he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets. Giron, who is rated 57th, is currently 15-14 on the season after losing in the opening round in Stuttgart last week. After taking the first set against Jiri Lehecka, the American, 29, lost.
At Roland Garros, Giron advanced to the third round before falling to Nicolas Jarry. The American has advanced to the quarterfinals this season in Auckland, Dallas, Delray Beach, and Munich. The 29-year-old has a 2-2 record at Halle, with both of his victories coming during his two-year run to the quarterfinals. Last year, Giron suffered a round one defeat.
Head-to-Head
In their two prior encounters, which both took place on hard courts, Medvedev prevailed without dropping a set. at their most recent match at the Australian Open’s first round, he lost just three games.
Predictions
Both Daniil Medvedev and Marcos Giron are stereotypical baseliners with similar game philosophies, including strong serving, strong hitting from either wing and fluid mobility. The Russian, though, has the advantage because of his greater expertise, dependability, and pedigree, particularly on grass, where he has a 33-18 record and one championship. Giron, on the other hand, is only 6-8 on the outside. Given his strong performance this year, 2023 ATP match wins leader Medvedev could beat his American opponent and get back to winning ways.
