(Tennis news) Daniil Medvedev defeated Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 6-2 to progress into the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters. The Russian player will be hoping to go all the way and win his first title on clary this season despite the fact that it’s a playing surface that Medvedev struggles on. He will now take on Germany’s Alexander Zverev who defeated Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut 6-4 6-4.
Speaking after the match, Medvedev said “I always struggle on clay, every match is a struggle. There’s no rhythm on clay, every bounce is a bad bounce and even when it’s good you’re expecting a bad bounce.” In other results, Norwegian player Casper Ruud defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 7-5, 7-6 (7-1) and will now take on Jan-Lennard Struff who overcame Alex de Minaur in straight sets.
Jannik Sinner will take on Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the third round after Diego Schwartzman retired due to a shoulder injury. Belarusian player Ilya Ivashka lost to Karen Khachanov 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 and the Russian ninth seed will face Andrey Rublev who overcame Spain’s Jaume Munar. Lorenzo Musetti will face World Number 1 Novak Djokovic following his comfortable 6-0 6-0 win over Luca Nardi while Nicolas Jarry will take on Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Czech Republic’s Jiri Lehecka will aim to defeat Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and will now meet Taylor Fritz, who defeated Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (12-10) 6-2. Danish third seed Holger Rune will take on Italy’s Matteo Berrettini on Thursday after their respective wins over Dominic Thiem and Francisco Cerundolo.
