(Cricket news) In a shocking turn of events, M.S Dhoni has handed over the captaincy of Chennai Super Kings to Ravindra Jadeja, just 2 days before the tournament kicks off. Jadeja will become only the 3rd player after Suresh Raina and M.S Dhoni to lead CSK. Before the mega auction, CSK retained M.S Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali. Dhoni was always expected to lead the side but the decision may have come at a good time as Dhoni may not be able to play all the games.
It will be interesting to see how Jadeja handles the responsibility of being a captain for the first time in his career. His improvement as a player has been incredible and there is every chance that it grows even more with captaincy. It is a blessing for him to have someone like M.S Dhoni in the team to guide him for some time at least. Taking over from a captain like Dhoni is no easy task for anyone let alone a player who doesn't have much leadership experience.
Along with the retained Jadeja, Dhoni, Gaikwad, and Moeen Ali; CSK also brought back Dwayne Bravo, K.M Asif, Ambati Rayudu, Mitchell Santner and Robin Uthappa. The core of the Chennai Super Kings is pretty much the same which makes things a little easier for Jadeja. He will also have to play a hand in developing the younger lot of players which is something CSK has always done. The decision to change the captaincy will not make sense if Dhoni still white ants Jadeja. The all-rounder will have to make big decisions and trust his instincts on certain things much like Virat Kohli did when he first took over as team India captain.
On a personal level, Jadeja might look to push himself further up the order. Recently, in the T20Is against Sri Lanka, he showed that he is more than capable of doing so. There are players who have only got better with the responsibilities of captaincy especially in the IPL. Everything indicates that Jadeja will be another example of that. The only question is if it happens instantly or takes a little while longer for that to happen.
