(Cricket news) India started the day at 357-6 with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja at the crease. The two all-rounders added 130 runs as both reached their respective half centuries. Ashwin was dismissed by Suranga Lakmal's bouncer but Jadeja kept going and completed his 2nd Test century. Jayant Yadav couldn't hang on for long as Vishwa Fernando dismissed him. Mohammed Shami provided great support to Jadeja as they stitched a 103 run partnership.
Jadeja was unbeaten on 175 when Rohit Sharma decided to declare the innings. India got a formidable total of 574 in the first innings. The big concern for Sri Lanka is that Lahiru Kumara did not return to the field after pulling his hamstring on day 1 which is an indication that he might not return to bowl even in the 2nd innings and that's a very big blow.
Dimuth Karunaratne and Lahiru Thirimane got off to a good start and Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah weren't getting any sort of help from the pitch. Rohit Sharma was quick to react by bringing on Ashwin after 7 overs. The partnership was finally broken in the 19th over when Ashwin's straight ball trapped Thirimane plum in front. The hero of the first innings Jadeja had to wait till the 24th over but he didn't waste anymore time. He trapped the Sri Lankan captain in front as the first one was not given out while the second one was given out.
Angelo Mathews and Pathum Nissanka steadied the ship for a while. Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up Nissanka's stumps with a beautiful slower ball but it didn't count as he had overstepped. Bumrah came back well as he dismissed Matthews shortly after with another Jaffa. Dhananjaya de Silva couldn't stay longer as Ashwin got him out via LBW. Nissanka and Charith Asalanka held on and negotiated the rest of the overs well as the day ended with Sri Lanka in deep trouble at 108/4. At this stage the match could get over on day 3 itself which will be India's goal.
