Rockstar Rashid helps Afghanistan trump Ireland by 36 runs

It was a busy day for Rashid Khan in the office as he contributed with both bat and ball to help Afghanistan register a 36 run victory over Ireland in Abu Dhabi. Afghanistan swept the ODI series 3-0 despite Paul Stirling’s ton for Ireland . Afghanistan had put up a total of 266/9 after losing wickets regularly as Ireland ‘s Simi Singh put up an excellent show with the ball after Andrew Balbirine won the toss and chose to field first. Rashid Khan was the top scorer with his quickfire 48 runs. Mohammad Nabi and Captain Asghar Afghan ensured a steady partnership putting up 51 runs for the 5th wicket, before Singh trapped Nabi on 32. Chasing a target of 267, Ireland had a tough start as they lost their openers James McCollum and captain Andy Balbirine cheaply on 3 and 5 respectively within the span of first 10 overs itself. Paul Stirling continued his purple patch scoring his second successive hundred with a brilliant 118 off 119 balls consisting of 9 fours and 6 sixes. His efforts of keeping the scoreboard ticking on one end went in vain as Ireland kept losing wickets from another end at regular intervals and after his dismissal to Mujeeb in the 37th over, Afghanistan were back in the business. Ireland needed 48 runs in the last 5 overs with 3 wickets in hand, but Afghanistan’s bowlers thwarted their hopes and restricted them to 230 on the first delivery of 48th over as Rashid unleashed the magic of his fingers with splendid figures of 4/29 in his nine overs. The ODI series win has bagged Afghanistan 30 points as they go above Pakistan in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League table at number 4. (Based on a Press Release by Cricket Ireland)
