(Cricket news) Jasprit Bumrah yesterday wreaked havoc in India's 1st ODI against England. India won the toss and put England to bat first on a pitch which had a fair bit of grass on it while there was a cloud cover as well. The conditions were perfect for fast bowling with lots of swing on offer. Bumrah picked up 6/19 in 7.2 overs which earned him the Player of the Match award. The seamer broke the record of the best bowling figures in ODIs by an Indian bowler in England. His figures were also the third-best by an Indian bowler in ODIs only behind Stuart Binny and Anil Kumble.
Bumrah made full use of the conditions to dismantle the English line-up. He consistently bowled at one area from which the pitch was doing things. He didn't have to vary his pace and lengths like he usually does in ODIs. Bumrah understood the conditions after just one ball as he picked up 2 wickets in his first over itself. England bowlers on the other hand didn't get the same sort of effect from the pitch as they failed to pick up a single wicket. Bumrah's unreal quality was on display at the Oval and he has been doing things like this on the international stage for a long time now.
While commentating on the game, former England captain Nasser Hussain labeled Bumrah as the best bowler across all formats. Sachin Tendulkar later tweeted "I've been of the opinion for a while now that Bumrah is the best bowler across formats. It was good to hear Nasser Hussain agree with me on-air." Bumrah might not be the best bowler in individual formats but across formats he just might be the best. There are not many bowlers these days who play all three formats. Perhaps the only real competition he has are Trent Boult and Shaheen Afridi. Bumrah however has proved that he is a different animal no matter what conditions he has to bowl in.
Bumrah has been consistently performing in all formats for over 4 years now and not many people would disagree with the opinion that he is currently the best all format bowler in the world. The reason this doesn't get talked about enough is that India uses Bumrah very carefully so as to protect him from injury. He doesn't play international white ball cricket that often but when he does special things happen. This England tour has been a very successful one for him as he won India's Player of the Series award in Tests. He played only 1 T20I but there too he was incredible and now in just one game he has left his mark on the ODI series. India will need Bumrah to fire once again in the 2nd ODI at Lords where conditions might be a little more tricky for him.
