Doubts loom over Kohli’s fitness as India face England in the 1st ODI

(Cricket news) After victory in the T20I series, India gear up to face England in the ODIs. This will be Jos Buttler's first ODI series since becoming full time England white ball captain. The Test series was tied while India won the T20I series, now England will be looking to level things by winning the 3 match ODI series. Both the teams have selected their strongest available squads for the series as no player has been rested. The series is an incredible preparation for the ODI World Cup even though that is next year. Compared to the T20Is, India's ODI team selections have a lot less headaches for Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma.

India's possible playing XI:

Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Yuzvendra Chahal

Bench: Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh

The only issue with this Indian line-up is that the batting ends at number 7. Shami and Bumrah can get a few runs but not a lot. Shardul Thakur could get a place in the squad due to his batting prowess but it will be a very tough call to leave one of Bumrah Shami and Prasidh out of the squad. Prasidh Krishna has been incredible for India in ODIs in every match he has played and he deserves a place in the side. There are a lot of reports about Virat Kohli suffering a groin injury and his availability is a big doubt. It will be a massive blow to team India if Kohli doesn't play even though he is not in good form.

England's possible playing XI:

Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Liam Livingston, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, David Willey, Matthew Parkinson, Reece Topley

Bench: Harry Brook, Bryson Carse, Craig Overton, Phil Salt

Root, Buttler and Stokes will be playing together in an ODI for the first time since the 2019 World Cup final. The England team is very well balanced with batting till number 9. They also have 7 bowling options, 8 if you include Joe Root in the line-up. England will be looking to play aggressive cricket which is possible due to their deep batting line-up. Jos Buttler will have a lot of responsibility especially while his team is bowling. He has a lot of bowling options and it could lead to a certain level of confusion. England may be tempted to sit out Parkinson in favour of Craig Overton to add more pace. Parkinson however as a specialist wrist spinner will be a great addition to the squad not just now but in the future as well.

The match will be played at the Oval where cloud cover is expected. England have the more balanced side and will be favourites especially if Virat Kohli misses the match. The battle between England's big hitters and the two spinners in the Indian team will be great to watch. Jonny Bairstow was the player of the series the last time these two teams played a 3 match ODI series and he is in red hot form at the moment. He is definitely the most priced wicket for India and the Indian seamers will be looking to get rid of Bairstow early.
