Cole Palmer will have a knee scan after being brutally challenged by Lisandro Martinez, a defender for Manchester United.
Following Chelsea’s 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, in which Moises Caicedo scored a lovely volley into the bottom corner to give the Blues a point, the 22-year-old hobbled off at Old Trafford.
Palmer was on the receiving end of a harsh challenge by Martinez in second half stoppage time, which on-field referee Robert Jones regarded as simply a yellow card. VAR agreed with Jones’ decision.
The decision infuriated Chelsea’s head coach Enzo Maresca, who thought Martinez had no intention of diving for the ball.
“I don’t think he has the intention of going for the ball,” the 44-year-old stated after the game. I can see it clearly.”
After receiving the full impact of Martinez’s challenge, Palmer (right) is in agony on the ground.
“Going for the ball was not the plan. He aims for the legs. The decision is without question. It’s definitely a red, in my opinion.”
According to Maresca, Palmer wore ice on his knee as a precaution to lessen the swelling and pain as he entered the Chelsea dressing room at full time.
Palmer is anticipated to have a scan to determine the degree of the injury and obtain official confirmation that nothing major has been sustained, according to Matt Law of the Daily Telegraph.
“Palmer’s soreness would settle down and that he had suffered no serious damage,” the team reportedly initially hoped.
Due to Maresca’s desire to control his workload, Palmer will not be included in the club’s Conference League, League Phase squad, giving him a week to recuperate from the challenge.
Chelsea’s next Premier League matchup is on Sunday at Stamford Bridge against Arsenal, who they overtook in the standings.
