Chris Jordan set to return for the T20 World Cup

(Cricket News) The English pacer Chris Jordan is set to make a return to the England’s T20 World Cup side. England will announce their provisional T20 World Cup squad on Tuesday for the global event starting in June.

Jordan’s return will force Chris Woakes out of the side. Woakes is currently a part of the Punjab Kings, but is yet to feature in a game for them. Jordan will come into the side, bringing in a wealth of experience. He has already been a part of five World Cups for England and has also led Surrey’s T20 side in two seasons.

Jordan has played a total of 88 T20Is and last featured for the English side in summer 2023 against New Zealand. He was not a part of the English side that toured to the Caribbean last December. With Jamie Overton ruled out now, Jordan will get a cut above rest given his abilities with the bat lower down the order and his death bowling skills.

Jordan was also a part of England’s successful campaign in the 2022 T20 World Cup, which was his fourth appearance in a World Cup. Though he is likely to feature sparingly in the Caribbean, he remains an exceptional fielder – often used as a sub – and a willing death bowler.

Jamie Overton was being looked after as a contender to fill the all-rounder spot, but inconclusive scans on a back injury have resulted in his omission from the provisional squad. Jordan has been playing domestic and franchise games despite of being out of the national side. His recent improvement with the bat is a relevant factor. Since the start of the 2023 Vitality Blast, he has averaged 30.05 and struck at 160.53 in all T20 cricket.

Despite of not travelling with the England side Jordan in the past year, had a very busy winter. He was a part of the BBL were he was playing for the Hobart Hurricanes. He was also a part of Gulf Giants in the ILT20 and Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League. He has not played any cricket since March, but will tune up for the World Cup with England’s four-match T20I series against Pakistan from May 22.

Possible England T20 World Cup squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali (vice-captain), Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Tom Hartley, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, Reece Topley
