(Football news) Last Saturday, Chris Wilder struck gold twice as the Blades defeated an injured Brentford 1-0, while the Blues’ winter struggles continued with a 2-0 loss to Everton.
A few months ago, Chelsea was able to hide the problems at Stamford Bridge with a string of decent away performances. However, Pochettino’s team has since experienced a decline in their away day performance, as they suffered their third straight loss on the road last weekend.
After narrowly missing out on territory held by Newcastle United and Manchester United after a nervous victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at home, the Blues were doomed to lose at Goodison Park thanks to second-half goals from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Lewis Dobbin for relegation-fighting Everton, who won despite having just 28% of the ball.
Since Todd Boehly’s consortium took over in West London, money has been spent freely. However, Pochettino has now demanded that the cheque book be opened again before the January transfer window, given Chelsea’s current position in the Premier League standings of 12th, which is all too familiar to the supporters of Stamford Bridge.
Another depressing loss on Saturday would be Pochettino’s first in ten years to oversee three straight Premier League losses (his Southampton team last suffered three straight losses in December 2013). Chelsea’s 18 losses in 2023 so far this year is only one more than Bournemouth’s (19) total for the current calendar year.
After watching Pochettino’s team lose two more back-up players to injury against the Toffees, Sheffield United has every right to hope that the Blues’ festive blues can be prolonged. Additionally, last weekend’s victory at Goodison Park marked the fifth straight Premier League game in which Chelsea has conceded at least two goals.
